What Makes You.....You?

Today, the semester started and I had my biology class. One of the topics we discussed was the human genome project. This was a project to try to identify the approximately 20,000-25,000 genes in human dna. This led to the discussion and question, "What makes you, you?". Is it just a battle between nature vs nurture or does it extend deeper? There are insects and even plants that have more genes than humans. A potato even has two more chromosomes than humans. Most people are affected by these two things on a way that influences who they are, but there are still those, who despite anything, are who they are. No matter how they are raised or what genes they are told make their bodies up. So does this concept of who you are extend to more than just your physical bodie and life on earth? Of course the gospel adds greately needed clarification on this subject; reassuring that this isn't the beginning and nor is it the end.
This life still has a very great impact even though it is just a blink the great scheme of things. And most important is what you decide to do with our time as you are here. Who you decide to be. These things do influence us all, but they are not where we started. Thus you don't have to just let them determine who you are or where you finish.

I would like to hear your opinions though. What is on your mind? And if you would like anything else discussed on here that is necessarily not relevant with this topic, go ahead and mention it. Who knows! You may see your idea discussed next!

  1. Never really considered that our dna really doesn't have that much of an effect on who we are. It kind of makes you wonder what we were like in the pre-earth life... were we mighty spiritual beings that just hadn't been tested yet? I know that in this life we always get self conscious and compare ourselves to others, but what if we could see what we really were? What if we could set aside all of our mortal short comings and ignore our imperfect bodies? If looks and appearance doesn't really matter in our spiritual lives, why should they matter in this life? Yes, you should be well groomed and take care of your body. But maybe we should be happy with what God gave us and not try to be like everyone else.
