Duck, Duck......Goose!

The other day for FHE in the wad we went to the field near our apartment complex and played a variety of recess games. One of these games a form of duck, duck, goose. For the most part the rules were the same with the small exception that the person who was it carried a squishy ball full or water. The person who was it would go around the circle as normal taping every one's head and saying duck, duck, duck, till he got to the unsuspecting victim, where he would cry out goose! and squeeze the ball drenching the chosen goose.

It was my roommates turn. He went around the circle slowly tapping heads and saying duck, duck, duck. He made it a full time around the circle not choosing anyone. As he came around the second time I knew he was going to choose me. As he got closer and closer and prepped myself for the splash of water and to begin the run around the circle. As he got to me, my guess was right and I got a head full of water as he yelled goose. As I got up from my spot I realized there was probably no chance that I would catch him going around the circle. I then decided to cut through the circle and intercept him. As I cut through and emerged on the other side, I leaped over two girls with surprised looks on their faces, and tackled my roommate. It was all in good fun, but my roommate did begin bleed as an old scab got reopened.

Though this was all in fun, it did get me thinking. How often to over dramatize the little things in our lives and under stress the really important things. How many times do we loose sight of what really matters and our priorities. It was a good reminder to enjoy life as it comes and to keep my life on God's path and with an eye towards heaven.

Trail Mix

I once heard that trail mix only has two ingredients: M&M's and disappointment.

The same can be said about life. You can either try and pursue your dreams and live a fulfilled life or live with disappointments.

Sure every now and again you will have a hand full of peanuts, raisins, hard times, or disappointments as you go along the trail of your life. It's true that these times are not as fun as when it seems like just hand fulls of M&M's, but if they come while you are pursuing your dreams and letting God lead your life, then they all work out into a wonderfully colored trail mix, with a life lived to the fullest, and satisfaction.

Entomology!

Entomology is a pretty big word that many people I talk with, don't have any idea what it is. Though it is a word that is not used in everyday language, it is a word that now describes me and my studies here at BYU. For those who don't know entomology is the study of insects, bugs, and creepy crawlies. Though I do have to admit, I feel like I sound cooler saying entomology and a little more like a nerd saying I study bugs; it is what I love to do. Everything from collecting to studying behavior and life patterns and habitats of all different types of insects and creepy crawlies. To some this would disgust or deter, but in my studies I have come to see the marvels of Gods creations and gained more of not only my own behavior and being, but really all life around me.

The question does come up though, what can one do with a degree in biology emphasizing in entomology. Recently I have actually seen many things that people are doing with bugs, that I find are more outside the box. Anything from selling insect jewlery at the freedom festival here in Provo, to selling more exotic bugs like the man in the video link below. Though I would like to collect insects and possibly sell them as stated, I would also like to continue my studies and understanding of not only of the insect world, but the living world at large. Feel free to continue to follow and read not only about insects and all that, but all about the crazy yet comedic things that go on in my life, the fun adventures, and the random thoughts that I have!

Wet Paint

I was walking along campus and saw this and just new I had to share it. I mean isn't it great to have a bench freshly painted with a wet paint sign on the ground? That way once you've already sat down and gotten comfortable, when you look down at your feet and see the sign, you will understand why it feels like you are sitting in something wet!

The things kids say....

Isn't it great some of the things that kids say? AT&T even now does commercials with this in mind, entitled, "It's not complicated, faster is better." With this post I wish to just relate a couple funny and profound things that I have heard kids say lately.

The first one was a couple weeks ago as I helped my friend coach swimming. The kids are great, but trying to keep them all swimming and doing the right set, can be a bit of a hand full at times. Believe it or not kids get distracted very easily. Whether it's because they are talking to friends, goofing off, or just plain tired, there is always some kid trying to get out of swimming the given set. This experience happened with one of my friend Tyler's kids. A great little Asian seven year old in the middle of the set jumped out of the pool and with great hopes to get out of the set and holding his chest, said, "Coach Tyler......I think I'm having a heart attack." Holding back a little bit of laughter Tyler went through some of the symptoms of a heart attack with him. After the boy affirmed three or four of these symptoms Tyler asked, "Does your stomach feel like it's warm or on fire?" The little boy grabbed his tummy in deep thought and after a few seconds of looking like he was making an important decision, looked up to affirm that it did when Tyler interrupted his response with a good coaches, "Ah! You aren't having a heart attack. Get back in the pool." This experience made me laugh ore than anything, but also reminded me of the innocence and good humor that kids have that I think we could all strive for.

The next is an example of how it's interesting that on a dark and gloomy day, how a snot faced, long haired, innocent little kid can say just what you need to hear and bring a little sunshine into your day. The other day while mowing lawns, after a streak of a bit of a rough time in my life, I was feeling a little down and in need of just a little pick me up. While getting our lawn mowers tuned up by the neighbor to one of our clients, a little boy with long blond hair looked out the window and noticing my Superman t-shirt, yelled out, "Hey Superman!" With a smile and a little chuckle I said my, "Hey!" back. With a big smile on his face, the boy then said, "Are you going to help some people today?" Without a sufficient answer, I could only smile and say, "Ya I'll try!"

This got me thinking....why do I think my problems are so big? Why don't I stop worrying about myself and really look for someone that I can help. Isn't that what a super hero does anyway? One reason that people connect so much with super heroes is not just because they have abilities and powers that anyone would love to have, but because they take the pains, disappointments, and heartaches that we all have in life, and use them to help others. This experience to me was rather ironic. This young kid was asking me if I was going to go help anyone, as if I had super powers, yet he as an innocent little boy, knowing he had no powers, was helping me with a simple question. One does not need to have powers, knowledge, or to even be big, muscular or an adult to help out. This world is pretty full of problems and people looking for answers and hope. We could all be helped out if we all had a little bit more sincere desire to know what is going on in other peoples lives, humor, belief, and wonder, as I have seen demonstrated in these two kids.
